Why It Matters

Because voters see the threat as real, they expect the worst if the U.S. backs off. If America ends military action and lifts sanctions, voters say Iran would build a nuclear weapon (25%), attack a U.S. ally (24%), or target Americans at home or abroad (24%). Just 16% expect Iran to resume negotiations, and 13% think ordinary Iranians’ lives would improve. Two-thirds (67%) also find it convincing that a nuclear Iran would trigger a regional arms race. The public understands the stakes.

How To Use This Data

Lead with a threat voters believe: “Death to America” and the nuclear danger. This support translates into a mandate: 90% back at least one form of pressure on Iran; only 10% reject all options. Frame the mission around keeping the Strait of Hormuz open, maintaining sanctions, and securing concrete terms—goals a cross-party majority supports.

Americans Take Iran at Its Word

A majority of voters 55% say Iran’s leaders really mean it when they chant “Death to America.” Just 30% call it primarily political rhetoric; 15% are unsure.
The belief runs through the political center: 69% of Republicans, 68% of voters 65 and older, and 62% of independents take the threat literally. Even among Democrats, 39% say Iran means it.
Voters expect the worst if America walks away. If the U.S. ended military action and lifted sanctions, more expect Iran to build a nuclear weapon (25%), attack a U.S. ally (24%), or attack Americans (24%) than expect any peaceful result.
Few see an upside to backing off: only 16% think Iran would return to negotiations and only 13% think conditions for ordinary Iranians would improve.
The danger is credible on its own terms. 67% of voters find it convincing that a nuclear Iran would trigger a regional arms race, including 85% of Republicans and 68% of independents.

Belief Converts Into a Mandate for Action

90% of voters support at least one form of action on Iran; only 10% choose none.
The widest support is for sustained pressure: diplomatic negotiations (44%), continued economic sanctions (38%), naval action to keep the Strait of Hormuz open (36%), and cyber operations (28%).
Voters back the pressure track while reserving the most open-ended steps a sustained air campaign (25%), airstrikes on nuclear sites (23%), and U.S. ground troops (13%).
Support for removing Iran’s government is led by Republicans (42%), with independents at 27% and Democrats at 12% room to grow as the case is made.
The takeaway is a public ready to act with a purpose: pressure and freedom of navigation are the actions voters most want to see used against a threat they take seriously.

The Audience Is Already Listening

41% of voters have seen, read, or heard a great deal about recent U.S. actions involving Iran and 44% have heard some — 85% in total.
Only 3% have heard nothing at all. The audience is already there.
Attention runs highest among the voters most receptive to the threat message: 55% of voters 65 and older and 49% of men follow a great deal.
The voters with the most room to move — women (33%) and voters under 30 (24%) — follow least closely today, and are the ones who shift most once they hear the case.
Attention does not track party: Republicans (43%), Democrats (42%), and independents (40%) all follow closely — a shared audience for a shared argument.

Pressure Plus Diplomacy Has Cross-Party Reach

Three actions hold support across every partisan group, giving the case a durable foundation.
Diplomatic negotiations are backed by a plurality of Democrats (49%) and independents (48%), with Republicans at 38%.
Continued sanctions carry the right and center: 50% of Republicans and 42% of independents, with Democrats at 26%.
Naval action to keep the Strait of Hormuz open draws 56% of Republicans and 36% of independents; it is strongest among voters 65 and older (48%) and rural voters (47%).
Older voters anchor the coalition: 54% of voters 65 and older support continued sanctions and 48% support naval action — the highest of any age group on both.

The Bottom Line

The American people already believe the core of the case. A majority say Iran means “Death to America,” most expect a nuclear Iran and further attacks if the United States backs off, and 90% support at least one form of action to stop it. 85% are following the conflict, and support for pressure holds across Republicans, independents, and Democrats alike.

The foundation is in place, voters see the threat as real and want it met. The task now is to name the mission in the terms they already accept keeping the Strait open, holding the sanctions, and stopping Iran’s bomb and lead the national debate that turns a believing public into a decisive majority.

AlphaROC conducted a national survey for Gingrich 360 among 1085 registered voters on September 3-4th, 2026. All interviews were conducted online. Survey invitations were randomly distributed, with demographic balances approximating U.S. census benchmarks. The sample of 1085 registered voters carries a margin of error of ±3.0% at the 95% confidence level.

Inflation cooled slightly last month even as consumers stepped up spending

Beyond the Label, What Voters Fear About Big Government Socialism

When the question becomes “Who decides?”, voters side with themselves, not Washington. That view is shared by independents, undecided voters, and even many Harris voters.

Lead with control, and keep it personal: your doctor, your car, your home, your savings. Avoid leading with cost alone: Medicare for All stays close to even when voters only hear the price tag.

What Voters Fear Most: Government Deciding for Them

Your healthcare: 60% are uncomfortable with a federal agency, rather than you and your doctor, deciding which treatments and medicines you can get. Only 30% are comfortable.
Your car and appliances: 66% oppose a federal rule forcing Americans to replace gas cars, stoves, and furnaces they already own. Only 25% support it.
Your property and savings: 58% call government control of private property “big government socialism.” 60% say the same about taxing your home, investments, and retirement savings.
Your country: 73% want a free-market country. Only 14% want a government-run system where people depend on politicians.

The takeaway is clear: voters want to make their own choices. When government tries to make those choices for them, opposition wins by wide margins.

Voters Don’t Want a Free Ride

Socialist candidates often promise more benefits paid for by someone else. Voters are not buying it.

Work for welfare: 75% agree able-bodied adults should have to work, look for work, or go to school to receive welfare. Only 15% disagree, and 59% agree strongly.
Even Democrats agree: 65% of Democrats, 66% of Harris voters, and 73% of independents support work requirements.
Fraud is a dealbreaker: 80% are concerned that over $250 million was stolen from a child-nutrition program in Democrat-run Minnesota, with 57% very concerned. 54% say allowing widespread welfare fraud is “big government socialism.”
“The billionaires will pay” is not believed: Only 28% think taxing billionaires alone could pay for Medicare for All. 61% say taxes would have to rise on far more people, including 28% who say most taxpayers, middle class included.

The message is simple: help should come with responsibility, and taxpayer money must be protected. Those two ideas unite voters across party lines.

A View Shared Beyond the Republican Base

These concerns are not limited to Republicans.

Independents: 57% view big government socialism unfavorably (18% favorably). 61% are uncomfortable with a federal agency deciding their care, and 72% prefer a free-market country (9% prefer a government-run one).
Undecided voters: 55% unfavorable versus just 11% favorable, a 5-to-1 margin. They prefer a free-market country by 64% to 8%.
Harris voters: 51% are uncomfortable with a federal agency deciding their care, 57% oppose the car and appliance mandate, and 66% support work requirements for welfare.
Age: Opposition grows with age, from 39% unfavorable among voters 18–24 to 69% among voters over 65. Younger voters are less settled, but those under 44 still prefer a free-market country by 63% to 24%.

When independents, undecided voters, and many Harris voters agree, this is not just a partisan talking point. It is a broad defense of personal choice.

The Bottom Line

Voters are not just rejecting a label. They are rejecting a government that decides for them and programs that hand out money without responsibility or protection from fraud. The strongest case against big government socialism is simple: you should decide, not Washington.

Why It Matters

Voters start out skeptical. Before hearing any arguments, 40% support recent U.S. actions regarding Iran and 52% oppose. Asked to choose the single most convincing of ten arguments, 17% pick the nuclear threat and 13% pick intelligence warnings — together 30%, well ahead of any other option.

After the full set of arguments, support leads 48% to 43%. Because the ten arguments were presented together, voters can't credit any single one, but they most often put the nuclear and intelligence arguments first.

How To Use This Data

Lead with the nuclear threat and back it with the intelligence warnings. The nuclear argument is voters’ most common first choice, while the intelligence warnings have the broadest reach convincing 71% of all voters, 73% of independents, and a majority of Democrats. Use the intelligence warnings as the proof point that the danger reaches Americans at home.

Several Security Arguments Convince Majorities

Iran’s backing of armed groups that have attacked U.S. troops, allies, and ships is convincing to 73% of voters.
The intelligence warning that Iran and the armed groups it supports can carry out attacks inside the United States is convincing to 71% and not convincing to 22%.
The Strait of Hormuz argument that Iranian control could raise global energy prices and impose costs on American households is convincing to 71% of voters.
The nuclear argument - that near-weapons-grade enrichment could lead to a weapon capable of targeting American cities is convincing to 64% and not convincing to 29%.

Direct Threats to Americans Have Broad Reach

The intelligence warning is convincing to 71% of all voters, including 73% of independents and 57% of Democrats.
The nuclear-threat argument is convincing to 64% overall and 64% of independents. One in three voters (33%) find it very convincing.
Women find the intelligence warning convincing 72% to 17%. Among voters age 65 and older, 78% find it convincing.

Oil and Gas: Convincing, But More Likely to Backfire

The Strait of Hormuz message initially looks like one of the strongest arguments in the survey. Voters were told that Iran was trying to control a waterway carrying about 20% of the world’s oil and that closing it would raise global energy prices and leave American households with the cost.

The argument convinces 71% of voters, including 71% of independents and 84% of Republicans.
But 26% of all voters say at least one of the ten arguments made them less supportive of recent U.S. actions. 57% say no argument made them less supportive.
Among that 26% group, 38% identify the oil-and-gas argument - the largest share for any message tested. Among independents in that group, 46% identify oil and gas.
That 38% is not 38% of all voters; it is the share of the smaller group who said at least one argument reduced their support. The finding is best read as a warning about emphasis.

Voters Take the Threat at Its Word

A majority, 55%, say Iran’s leaders really mean it when they chant “Death to America,” while 30% say it is primarily political rhetoric. Independents say they mean it 62% to 24%.
Asked what is likely if the United States ends military action and sanctions, the most-selected outcome is Iran building one or more nuclear weapons (25%). About the same share expect attacks on a U.S. ally (24%), attacks on Americans at home or overseas (24%), or the situation to remain roughly as it is (24%).
Only 6% expect Iran to reduce its uranium enrichment if U.S. military action and sanctions end.

Support Moves After Voters Hear the Case

Before hearing the arguments, voters oppose recent U.S. actions regarding Iran 52% to 40%. Afterward, they support them 48% to 43% - a 17-point net shift.
Independents move from 35% support to 43%; women move from 30% to 43%; and Democratic support more than doubles from 8% to 20%.

The Bottom Line

The survey presented ten arguments together and does not isolate the effect of any single one. But the pattern is consistent: voters most often choose the nuclear threat as the strongest reason to act, 71% find the intelligence warnings convincing, and after hearing the case, opinion moves from 40% support and 52% opposition to 48% and 43%.

The evidence suggests that a direct threat to Americans, backed by intelligence warnings, is the clearest way to move voters on Iran.

Why It Matters

Cost has long been central to the case against government-run healthcare. In this survey, a $3.3 trillion annual cost, roughly $25,000 per household, still leaves Medicare for All ahead by six points; a stronger tax-revenue comparison produces an almost even split.

By contrast, 60.3% are uncomfortable with a federal agency deciding covered treatments rather than patients, families, and doctors. The survey does not directly ask voters to rank cost versus control, but the contrast suggests personal decision-making is a more potent concern.

How To Use This Data

Lead with who decides, not what it costs. Neither cost test produces majority opposition. Federal control of treatment decisions leaves voters uncomfortable by 30 points, while fewer than three in ten say Medicare for All would require higher taxes on most taxpayers, including the middle class.

Cost Warnings Do Not Produce Majority Opposition

Told Medicare for All would cost roughly $3.3 trillion a year about $25,000 per household voters supportit 45% to 39%, a 6-point margin.
Republicans oppose 54% to 34%. Democrats support 61% to 25%. Independents split evenly, 39% support to 39% oppose.
Told the annual cost exceeds everything the federal government collects from all individual and corporate income taxes combined, voters divide almost evenly: 42% support, 43% oppose.

Fewer Than Three in Ten Say Most Taxpayers Would Pay

Asked how Medicare for All would be funded, only 27% say it would require raising taxes on most taxpayers, including the middle class.
29% say only billionaires would need to be taxed. 31% say taxes would need to rise on people earning $400,000 or more.
Asked again later in the survey, the figure barely moves — 28%. Republicans are at 42%; Democrats at 16%; independents at 26%.

Control Produces a Much Clearer Reaction

Asked how comfortable they are with a federal agency rather than themselves, their family, and their doctor deciding which treatments and medications they are allowed to receive, voters are uncomfortable 60% to 30% — a 30-point gap.
41% are very uncomfortable. For comparison, 24% strongly oppose Medicare for All in the $3.3 trillion/$25,000-per-household cost test.
The reaction crosses party lines. Republicans are uncomfortable 72% to 23%. Independents 61% to 26%. Among Democrats, 49% are uncomfortable and 41% comfortable.
Among women who backed the Republican ticket in 2024, discomfort reaches 80%.

Voters Already Have a Name for It

61.2% say government-run healthcare qualifies as big government socialism, including 60.2% of independents.
60.3% say putting government control ahead of personal choice qualifies as big government socialism, including 56.6% of independents.
Asked to choose the kind of country they want to live in, 72.9% choose a free-market entrepreneurial system and 14.0% a government-controlled bureaucratic one. Among independents, it is 71.5% to 8.9%.

The Bottom Line

The survey does not directly ask voters to rank cost versus control. But the contrast is clear: the $3.3 trillion/$25,000 cost test leaves Medicare for All ahead 45.1% to 38.8%, and the stronger revenue comparison is nearly even, 42.4% to 43.3%. On federal control of treatment decisions, however, 60.3% are uncomfortable and 30.2% are comfortable. The evidence suggests personal control and choice resonate more clearly than fiscal scale alone.

National identity outranks racial or ethnic identity for most voters. The majority of people, 87%, saw themselves primarily as American rather than as a person of color. Additionally, 83% felt more connected to being American than to their race or ethnicity.
Dissatisfaction is about repair, not rejection. The 2022 survey found 67% say “America is currently not working,” while 88% call the U.S. a good country and 87% want to “restore the America that works”—showing dissatisfaction aimed at restoring standards rather than discarding them.

Why It Matters

The 25th anniversary of September 11 is about remembrance first. Remembering those who were killed, those who ran toward danger, those who served in the years that followed, and a country so drastically altered by a single event.

But after 25 years, we look to see where a nation has carried forward. ANMP’s polling shows that even after years of political conflict, large majorities still see America as a country worth believing in and still recognize a shared civic identity that reaches beyond partisan divisions.

Pride in America Remains a Broad Majority View

In June 2024, 85% agreed: “I am proud to be an American.”
An even larger 90% agreed: “I am grateful to be an American.”

Those results are important because they capture something more durable than satisfaction with a president, Congress, or the direction of the country. Pride and gratitude toward America remained overwhelming even in a highly polarized political environment.

87% agreed that Independence Day should be celebrated by Americans of every race, color, and creed.
83% agreed that all Americans should take pride in the Founders’ achievement in declaring independence and establishing the world’s longest-surviving democracy.
82% said the principles contained in the Declaration of Independence are still relevant today.
76% agreed that honoring the Founders for what they accomplished, despite their being wrong about slavery, is an essential part of helping unify a country as diverse as America.

The pattern is consistent: voters do not have to overlook America’s failures to believe its founding ideals remain relevant or that its national story can still unify people from different backgrounds.

The Historical Arc: Americans Still Saw Themselves as Americans

ANMP found the same underlying attachment three years earlier. In May 2021, voters overwhelmingly chose an American identity when asked to weigh it against narrower racial or ethnic identities, and large majorities expressed confidence in the country itself.

87% primarily thought of themselves as American rather than as a person of color.
83% identified more as American than by their racial or ethnic background.
78% agreed that the United States is the greatest country on Earth.
75% agreed that the United States is the most free and democratic country in the world.

Disappointment With America Was Not Rejection of America

The May 2022 survey captured a revealing tension. Americans were dissatisfied, but their dissatisfaction reflected a desire to repair the country rather than abandon it.

88% agreed that the United States of America is a good country.
At the same time, 67% agreed that “America is currently not working.”
And 87% agreed: “We need to restore the America that works.”

That combination matters on the 25th anniversary of 9/11. Voters can believe the country is failing to meet its standards while still believing those standards are worth recovering. Criticism and patriotism are not opposites in the data.

September 11 Is a Reminder of What National Unity Looks Like

The lesson of September 11 is not that Americans stopped disagreeing. They did not. It is that when confronted with something larger than politics, Americans were capable of looking beyond political, social, and economic labels to see one another first as fellow citizens.

ANMP’s polling suggests the foundation for that kind of unity still exists. Americans continue to express overwhelming attachment to the country, its ideals, its freedom, and a common national identity, even as they disagree over whether the country is living up to those ideals.

The Bottom Line-25 years Later

September 11, 2001, showed America at its most vulnerable. It also showed Americans at their most courageous and united.

Twenty-five years later, the country is different. A generation has grown up. Wars have been fought. The nation has become more polarized. But the data shows us something worth remembering, the American identity survived.

Large majorities still say they are proud and grateful to be Americans. They believe the principles our nation was founded on remain relevant. They believe national traditions can belong to Americans of every race, color, and creed.

On this 25^th anniversary of September 11, we remember what Americans discovered about one another in the days that followed that while our disagreements are real so is what we share.

Our findings suggest a different possibility.

Many voters may not be rejecting markets at all. Instead, they appear to be looking for a compelling vision for creating broader prosperity. When offered a positive alternative focused on improving competition, expanding opportunity, and helping more Americans succeed through work, voters overwhelmingly prefer that approach over relying primarily on redistribution.

If that’s true, the debate may be less about capitalism versus socialism than about whether political leaders can articulate a credible plan for building an economy that works for more Americans.

Economic messages should emphasize creating opportunity, not simply redistributing income.

Rather than defending the status quo or promising larger government programs, policymakers should focus on improving the rules that shape markets so businesses compete, workers earn better wages, entrepreneurs can succeed, and more Americans have the opportunity to prosper through their own efforts.

Most Americans Believe the Economy Can Work Better

Overall, 60% of Americans say the U.S. economy works somewhat or very poorly for the average American, while 39% say it works somewhat or very well.
Republicans are significantly more positive about today’s economy (68% well) than Democrats (18% well), reflecting sharply different assessments of current economic conditions.
Men are far more optimistic than women. Nearly half of men (49%) say the economy works well for the average American, compared to just 28% of women—a 21-point gender gap, one of the largest demographic differences in the survey.
Lower-income Americans are substantially more negative than higher-income Americans. Positive assessments rise steadily from 32% among those earning under $50,000 annually to 51% among those earning $150,000 or more.

Americans Prefer Creating Opportunity Over Redistribution

When asked to choose between two approaches, 61% say government should focus primarily on improving the rules that shape the economy so businesses compete, workers earn better wages, and more Americans can succeed through their work.
Just 34% prefer focusing primarily on taxes and government programs to help people who are left behind by the economy.
Republicans favor improving the rules by 81% to 16%.
Independents favor improving the rules by 61% to 33%.
Even Democrats favor improving the rules over redistribution, 52% to 44%.

The preference for creating broader opportunity extends well beyond Republicans, attracting majority or plurality support across the political spectrum.

Improving the Rules of the Economy Is the Plurality Choice Across America

When voters are presented with three distinct approaches to the economy—limited government, improving the rules that shape markets, or redistribution—they consistently choose improving the rules.

53% choose improving the rules that shape markets to create more competition, better jobs, rising wages, and greater opportunity, compared to 22% who prefer government mostly staying out of the economy and 18% who prefer relying more on taxes and government programs to redistribute income.
Republicans (51%), Democrats (59%), and Independents (53%) all identify improving the rules as their preferred approach.
Men and women, as well as urban, suburban, and rural voters, also choose improving the rules over either alternative.
Younger voters (28%) and Black respondents (31%) express greater support for redistribution than the overall electorate. Even so, improving the rules remains the top choice among younger voters (47%) and is statistically tied with redistribution among Black respondents (45% improve the rules; 47% redistribute).

The Bottom Line

The results suggest Americans are not simply choosing between defending today’s economy and expanding redistribution.

When presented with a positive vision focused on creating broader opportunity—through stronger competition, better jobs, rising wages, and greater opportunity—they overwhelmingly prefer that approach to relying primarily on redistribution.

That finding suggests economic messaging may be strongest when it focuses on how to build an economy that works for more Americans, rather than framing the debate as a choice between the status quo and larger government programs.

A Pattern That Crosses Every Line: Party, Age, and Region

The crosstabs reveal why this pattern is so significant: it holds across nearly every demographic group in the survey.

Party barely matters. Greater freedom to choose doctors wins 76% of Republicans, 80% of Democrats, and 77% of independents; locally accountable healthcare wins 71%, 75%, and 73%; patient-owned records wins 63%, 66%, and 67%. On no question do the parties diverge by more than a few points.
Both 2024 coalitions agree. Trump voters and Harris voters land within roughly one to four points of each other on every patient-control question tested — a rare instance of the two electorates describing the same solution.
Intensity rises with engagement. Likely voters back locally accountable healthcare at 75% versus 62% among less-likely voters, and definite voters prefer patients comparing prices at 79% versus 66% — the voters most certain to show up feel this most strongly.
Age shapes the entry point, not the verdict. Seniors are the strongest supporters of local accountability (79% among voters over 65), while voters 35–54 are the strongest supporters of owning their records (68–70%) and price comparison peaks at 81% among ages 55–64 — every age group lands on the same side.

A healthcare vision that unites Republicans, Democrats, independents, both 2024 coalitions, and every age group is not a partisan message — it is an emerging consensus.

76% say lawmakers should spend their time on other issues; only 16% call this a reasonable use of legislative time.
That view is nearly unanimous across groups: 70% of Democrats, 80% of independents, 79% of women, and 92% of seniors say legislators should focus elsewhere.

Notably, this judgment requires no position on gender or language at all — it reflects a shared public view about what legislatures should prioritize.

Public Accountability

55% of voters view a politician who supports the change less favorably (37% much less favorably); 17% view such a politician more favorably.
Among independents, 65% view supporters of the change less favorably; among women, 59%. Even among Democrats, more voters react negatively (33%) than positively (25%), with 43% saying it makes no difference.
These findings indicate that public officials’ positions on legal family-law language are obvious to constituents and factor into how those officials are evaluated.
