WHY IT MATTERS – Americans tend to vote for change when they are not happy with the state of the nation.
THE NUMBERS – A recent Gallup survey asked Americans “In general, are you satisfied or dissatisfied with the way things are going in the United States at this time?”
18 percent – Satisfied
82 percent – Dissatisfied
The survey also evaluated Americans’ confidence in the economy and “their perceptions of whether it is getting better or worse.”
17 percent – Economic conditions are excellent or good
36 percent – Economic conditions are only fair
47 percent – Economic conditions are poor
The survey also asked Americans “What do you think is the most important problem facing this country today?” The top three answers were government, the economy, and immigration.
19 percent – Government
13 percent – Economy
13 percent – Immigration
When broken down by political party, Republicans say immigration (25 percent), Democrats say government (19 percent), and Independents say government (17 percent).
BOTTOM LINE – Most Americans are dissatisfied with the current direction of the country under President Joe Biden, with economic conditions, government, and immigration being the top issues of concern.
