73% of voters say healthcare is expensive because too many organizations profit from its complexity — that's a diagnosis of the system, not a complaint about spending.
This is where our anti trust laws have failed; allowing the consolidation of many separate medical practices. Why didn't the DOJ stop these consolidations? Because "campaign contributions" are a tool for powerful insurance groups, pharmaceutical companies and others to control our economy for the worse. The DOJ should start, immediately, in forcing the unwinding of many of these consolidations to allow market forces to work.
This is a great study. Very thorough, and points at exactly what the problem is: too many institutions taking OUR healthcare money - insurance companies are the worst offenders. We pay them to alleviate our fear of ill health, and pay a premium for it, and then they don't remove or ameliorate the source of that fear, and then they charge us for their failure.
This health system really, like the education system, needs to go backwards. We had good healthcare, back in the day, when we went to our doctor, or checked into a hospital on our own, before the people with the big money got their claws into our government representatives and paid them to create a system that minimized healthcare and maximized their profit. They pretended to be creating a system that would provide healthcare for "the poor, who can't afford healthcare", and they pretended to be "spreading the wealth around", when all they were doing was taking our money for themselves and letting the poor get sick and die. In the process they destroyed our medical education system, which was the envy of the world, so that now we pay a premium just to find a doctor close enough to be of any use.
I am loathe to bring politics into any discussion, but this is precisely and exactly what happens to any critical service when it fails to defend itself against the disease of socialism.
This is, in a darkly humorous way, a social disease, and your insurance doesn't cover it, because your insurance is THE CAUSE of it.
If you want to fix this, pick your stone carefully, David, because Goliath really doesn't want you messing with his money.
Worthwhile undertaking the challenge.
